Un.Real

A Biophilic Experiment

Biophilic Effect

The biophilic effect refers to a person’s affinity for the natural world and living things. Biophilic design incorporates elements of nature into the built environment using lighting, view of nature, living elements, natural materials and carefully selected patterns, colors, shapes and textures.

The idea for this collection stems from my MFA research, which studies the emotional benefits of indirect and direct integrations of biophilia within the built environment and apparel.

Un.Real is a multi-phase research project that is in its early days. Currently, it shows in the form of an apparel collection featuring 7 ensembles: each inspired by a different biome or moment in nature.

This collection features carefully selected fabrications and colors that best represent and convey the chosen environment.

The excitement of being a featured designer at Omaha Fashion Week isn’t lost on Bex Cermin: Going backstage, seeing her creations modeled on the runway, networking with other designers, investors and buyers.

Cermin’s goal with her nature-inspired collection, ironically, will be to momentarily transport the crowd away from the bright lights and glamor. “Each look represents a moment in nature. I want the audience to feel like they can relate to that environment,” she said.
